Riverdale Season 2: Five Questions we have after episode 7

The latest episode of Riverdale was another entertaining offering from the subversive teen drama – but it also opened up a lot of questions.

As Jughead is drawn deeper and deeper into Serpent activities, an affair between Sheriff Keller and Mayor McCoy is revealed, and the Black Hood swears vengeance, there are a lot of questions to ask – and a lot of answers we need to find.

Here are five questions we need answering after the latest episode of Riverdale, Tales from the Darkside.

Each and every one of these is actually labelled “five questioned we need answering” over at Metro, because it took me the duration of the series – significantly over six months! – to realise that “five questions we have” is a better grammatical formation of what I was trying to say. I’m not sure what I was going for in the first place.

Something kinda, I guess, not threatening obviously, but direct and emphatic and a little “woah” while still being serious, you know? Hopefully you know, because then at least someone would.

The latest episode of Riverdale was another entertaining offering from the subversive teen drama – but it also opened up a lot of questions.

As the Southside Serpents are drawn into a conflict with the Ghoulies, Betty gets closer to uncovering the identity of the Black Hood killer, and the mysterious Sugarman is revealed, there are a lot of questions to ask – and a lot of answers we need to find.

Here are five questions we need answering after the latest episode of Riverdale, Death Proof.

It took me ages to work out how I was meant to spell “Ghoulies”, and I’m pretty sure I still got it wrong.

With Jughead joining the Southside Serpents, a dark figure from Veronica’s bourgeoisie past, and conversations with the Black Hood killer, there are a lot of questions to ask – and a lot of answers we need to find in upcoming episodes.

Here’s another Riverdale article –  in hindsight, it’s interesting to see how the series shaped out, and how some of my predictions were pretty much on point. That says more about Riverdale that it does about me, though, I suspect.

With growing conflict between Betty and Jughead, Archie descending further into the darkness, and a reveal about the Black Hood killer, there are a lot of questions to ask – and a lot of answers we need to find. Here are five questions we need answering after the latest episode of Riverdale, The Town That Dreaded Sundown.

Here’s my another Riverdale article! One thing I do actually quite like about Riverdale is the way that, more or less, each episode title is a reference to a movie; it’s grounding the show in those sort of genre allusions and shifts that make the show work (when it does work, that is).

With the introduction of a new gang, Archie forming a neighbourhood watch group, and a letter from the Angel of Death, there are a lot of mysteries to solve – and a lot of questions we need to find the answers to.

Another Riverdale article from me, with speculation, fan theories and so on – this one is old enough that I was still calling the Black Hood “the Angel of Death”, because they’d not really started saying the Black Hood yet.

This is also the one where I asked whether or not Toni Topaz would pose a threat to “Bughead”, which is exactly the sort of slightly ridiculous comment that typifies these Riverdale articles. It makes me laugh, anyway.

With the continuation of the Angel of Death storyline, some more machinations from the Lodge family, and the start of a new drug craze in the town of Riverdale, there are a lot of mysteries to solve. And that means there’s a lot of answers we need to find.

The first episode of Riverdale’s second series saw the much-discussed return of Veronica’s father, Hiram Lodge. Hiram Lodge haunted the narrative of the first season, heavily impacting the lives of several characters but never showing up – until now.

But just who is Hiram Lodge? What does his return mean for Riverdale? How will it impact Archie and the gang? And what will he do next?

An article on Hiram Lodge…

Riverdale Season 2: Who is the Angel of Death, AKA the Black Hood?

riverdale season 2 a kiss before dying black hood eyes hal cooper joseph svenson sheriff keller angel of death green eyes fred andrews tall boy lochlyn munro dark betty eyes

It’s the biggest question posed by Riverdale’s season opener – just who is the Angel of Death? Last year, Riverdale ended on a cliffhanger – showing us that the death of Jason Blossom was just the beginning, and that so much more danger was still to come to this sleepy town.

In what appeared to be a robbery gone wrong at Pop’s Diner, Fred Andrews was shot, and lay bleeding on the ground. Thankfully, he survived – but curiously, it became clear that this wasn’t a robbery attempt. Or at least, not an attempt to rob the diner. The so-called Angel of Death stole Fred’s wallet – which, according to Archie, contained everything important to him.

So, who was it? While it’s difficult to say exactly who it is just yet, here are a few theories that start to make sense of what we know so far…

Here’s my piece with a few theories on Riverdale’s Angel of Death… who they shortly renamed the Black Hood. I’m not sure which name I prefer really; the Angel of Death feels Extremely Extra in the appropriate Riverdale way, so that fits better, but the Black Hood was easier to type each week. So, swings and roundabouts.

It’s a Twin Peaks-inspired gothic retelling of the classic Archie comics; the first season captured the hearts and minds of audiences with its dark aesthetic – and this second promises to escalate things even further.

Archie vs Predator: Why Riverdale’s Miss Grundy storyline didn’t work

riverdale archie vs predator miss grundy car sex scene the cw sarah habel geraldine grundy jennifer gibson statutory rape

On paper, it’s evident what this is – a predatory relationship between a teacher and a student, nothing more complicated than that. Within the show, however, this fairly straightforward detail is lost somewhat, leaving Riverdale in a far more problematic position: Archie and Miss Grundy are presented as having an illicit romance, one which is sexualised and glamorised by the narrative.

In part, it’s perhaps just a matter of visuals; it’s easy to forget that the teenagers in Riverdale really are just that, given that many of the actors look so much older. Without that in mind, the dynamic does change considerably – but it has to be remembered that Archie and his peers are 16 years old, all minors. Miss Grundy is a statutory rapist. There’s no other way of looking at it.

I actually really like Riverdale, generally speaking. It’s a huge amount of fun, and I’m disappointed that the first time I’ve written about it has been to critique it, rather than celebrating it.

But, much as I enjoy it, it does have flaws. And one of those flaws is the utterly tone-deaf and poorly handled Miss Grundy storyline, in which the show sexualises and glamorises a predatory relationship.

So, you know. Some limits.
