So, today’s big film news…
And that’s… interesting.
A lot of people are, and perhaps rightfully so, suggesting that DC/WB is making a mistake in having a big group movie to start their cinematic universe – essentially, the complaint is that DC isn’t aping Marvel.
Now, fair enough, I suppose. Generally it’s (considered) best to be conservative, especially in movies, so if there is a tried and tested method, it’s probably best to follow that one. However! I don’t actually think that it’s necessary to follow the Marvel method, so to speak, and that it is possible to make a Justice League movie without prior films. I’ll write a post about that soon, but for now, Wonder Woman.
Personally, I hated Man of Steel. Apologies if you did enjoy it, but I thought it was horrible. So… any judgement I’ve got on this news is a tad biased, I guess.
None of the casting has seemed particularly poor to me, to be honest. I wasn’t bothered by “Batfleck”, nor by this, since I’ve never seen any of their respective work.
Now, the main concern of a lot of people is that this seems… slapdash. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. I did just a moment ago say that I believed it possible to have a Justice League film without any set up, so it’d be a tad hypocritical for me to moan about rushing things.
What I’m worried about is… the ethos of the characters, I guess, and any potential ramifications of this film.
I thought Man of Steel handled Superman horrendously. If the same thing happens to Wonder Woman and Batman, I’d be… sad. But the worry would also be that it’d become increasingly difficult for any new films to be made with these characters. Wonder Woman is sort of the main issue to do with that. There have been loads and loads of problems with getting her a movie, or with getting getting a superhero movie with a female lead full stop.
What I’m concerned about is, that if people say “We hated Wonder Woman in this film” the studio will see “We hated Wonder Woman in this film” and then proceed to shut down any attempts at a better film.
So… yeah, this quick news reaction round up has turned into something a bit longer than expected.
(That’s not the title of the film, by the way, just my attempt at a catchy title. At least I hope it’s not the title, that’d be rubbish.)
